Dangerous to go to college in NY?

Since New York is known to have a wild atmosphere, is it dangerous to go to college there, in regards to the possibility of getting mugged, etc? I would really love to go to a fashion school in NY, but I'm worried about how NY's atmosphere might negatively affect my life. So would anyone like to inform me, a non-native New Yorker, about New York's lifestyles and the dangers it might hold(if there are any)?
