Why is East Melbourne a great place to live?

My family is deciding to move to East Melbourne, but i'm not sure if it is the right choice. I have a son who is 3 months old and we want to make sure the place we raise our child would be a great place to live. Or should we move to West Melbourne, because i heard that the western suburbs is a great place to live too.Which side of Melbourne is the best place to live? Can you tell me why too? Thank you:)
