How often should I water a cactus?

I bought a little pot of cacti(there are 3 different kinds in it), and I'm wondering how often I should water it? Its difficult to tell if its dry because the soil is tiny black stones, rather than dirt. It didn't come with any type of instructions, so I have no idea about how frequently it needs water. Thanks for any suggestions!
