Trip to New York!!!!!!?

my boyfriend and I want to spend a month travelling aroung usa (we are from the UK). we would like to spend a week in New York, a week in Seatle and a week San Fran etc! what is the best way to do this? should we book through a travel agents or book online ourselves! also, do you guys know of any good cheapish hotels etc?
