A question to experianced dwarf hamster owners?

i recently purchased a russian dwarf hamster and im currently using a tiny ceramic dish as his "water bowl" and i was wondering how long it would take for him to transition to a normal drinking spout(forgot what they are called)...ive tried observing him sniffing the spout but he just runs away, the spout is fully functional, im just worried that he might get dehydrated. thanks
